Well, you were there and saw what happened, so if you're happy to wait, that's fine; we wait. From your descriptions of what happened, though, I guess it really *is* a good thing I wasn't there at the time.

His boss is the CEO, who is not a physician. I'm really not too upset about the wait.

Re the phone call this morning: All well and good, but I do not understand why complaints about the doctor have to be handled by *only* the VP of medical staffing.

Doesn't the man have a deputy?

Or a boss?

Or are we to assume that when he goes on holiday, the entire medical staffing department makes like the old Merrill Lynch commercials for two weeks and freezes solid, listening in eager anticipation for the dulcet tones heralding his return?

Retriever, thank you for your comments. I hope that I have emphasized the caring nature of everyone except the doctor. The fact that they were rendered rather helpless by faulty equipment and lack of response from maintenance was not their fault. Their attempts to do right were obvious.

The email link LittleSister sent resulted in 2 phone calls to my Dad and 1 to me, and... as luck would have it we missed all three calls. Dad returned his two, got voice mail and asked for calls in return which did not happen.

However, the message I got did not leave a number, just a name. So, I called the main switchboard and got transferred to two other people and finally the receptionist for the administrative offices. None of these people had ever heard of the person who left the message for me, and it was an unusual name.

Finally, the administrative receptionist decided it must have been one of the teenaged volunteers who return calls of this type for them. That sort of astounded me a bit, as I don't think even the brightest teenager can accurately filter complaints. I may be wrong, of course.

Anyway, I emphasized to the receptionist that what we were complaining about amounted to malpractice and she transferred me to the office of the Vice President of Medical Staff. His secretary informed me that he was out of town for 2 weeks, but wanted to take down the details of the complaint.

So now we wait again.

His response will determine whether I identify the hospital and doctor on this blog -- both of which are very fortunate that we ignored that doctor's advice.

Wow! Lucky for your Dad that you are so diligent in seeking out better care for him. My parents are dead (inlaws also) and how well I remember the stress of fighting with British NHS mds and nurses under a system where tests and treatments were delayed or denied routinely, particularly for anyone over 70 and/or already ill.

You do have to just trust your gut. I didn't have much luck being tough, myself, but found it best to thank them before they gave the care I hoped they would give my parent. Even when furious, I would try to express appreciation for whatever they HAD done right, etc. However, in this case, it would be appropriate to express your dismay with all that they ignored, at your dad's peril.

I am praying for his complete and speedy recovery and that you get some rest soon.

What the hell ever happened to "First, do no harm" ???

This "hospitalist" (whatever that means; I'm assuming it means doctor?) needs his status at the hospital, and his license to practice medicine, reviewed.

Not sure what you guys are doing from there, but I'm sending a link to these two articles to the hospital's complaint center for a start.
